January 1, 2009: Our England Ancestry

I am updating our early Avery Family records to include some new information being added to my research which is well documented.  For those of you that have the Avery Family story book I wrote many years ago, this new information changes some of the names and dates of generations prior to William W. Avery’s parents, so you might want to print off this information and place it with your book.

To try to make it easier for you to know how you fit into our Avery Family line, each of you with a blood connection to our family has a Branch/Generation code.

William W. Avery and Susannah Gilbert came to American in 1839.  They married in 1840 and built their home in Seneca Falls, New York in about 1840 or 1841.  They had eight children which were born at home (later referred to as to old homestead).  Each of us is related to one of these children, and so I have assigned a branch number to each child.  The first child born to William and Susannah is Branch 1; the second child is Branch 2 and so on for all eight children.  So if you are in Branch 4, it means you can trace your family line back to the 4th child born to William and Susannah.

We can point to William and Susannah as beginning our Avery Family bloodline here in America.  I consider them as my staring point which splits my research into 2 sections -   William W. Avery’s (1) descendants and (2) his ancestors.   Again, to keep this as simple as possible, we can look at people in either of these two sections by generation.  For instance, the children of William and Susannah are generation 1 as they are 1 generation removed from William and Susannah.  Their grandchildren would be generation 2 as they are 2 generations removed and so on.  Therefore, if your Branch/Generation code is 8/4 you know your family bloodline tracks back to the 8th child born to William and Susannah and you are 4 generations removed from them.

We have a few family members still living that are in generation 3 and many new family members that are in generation 7.   Age is not a good measurement between generations since William and Susannah had their 8 children over a period of 20 years.

We are all related to William and Susannah so therefore, we are all related to William’s parents, grandparents and so forth.  Going back in time from William W., there are no Branch codes – only a Generation number as follows:  -1 his parents; -2 his grandparents; -3 his great grandparents etc.
