William Weeks Avery was born 23 Feb 1821 in Benenden, Kent County, England.  At the age 19, he sailed to America arriving in New York on May 18, 1840 aboard the sailing ship Quebec.  There is no record I can locate that any of his family sailed with him.  It appears he sailed with Samuel Gilbert, his wife Mary Smith, their 6 daughters and a son.

William’s father is William Waters Avery born 30 Oct 1802 and married Hannah Weeks.   My research goes back even further, but it is not sufficiently documented to include at this time.

Shortly after his arrival in America, William married one of Samuel Gilbert’s daughters Susannah Gilbert on 21 Jun 1840.  They soon bought 55 acres of land in Seneca Falls where they built their home in 1840.

Today their home still stands and is lived in by a descendant of William and Susannah.  The home has remained in the Avery family for most of the 165 years since is was originally built.  William and Susannah’s 8 children were all born in their home and in time a total of 17 of my Avery ancestors would also be born in this house.

Susannah died on 08 May 1892 at the age of 78.  William died on 14 Aug 1894 at the age of 73.  Both are buried in the Southwick Cemetery, Seneca Falls, NY.

 Each of their 8 children forms a ‘branch’ of our family.
